I must say it was quite
apparent that the month of June was out to break some past weather
records. We had the highest temperature and a record amount of
rain, in the amount of 200mm, which is nearly eight inches of water
- a fair amount to say the least. Looking at the brighter picture,
we were able to enjoy the sun early and we don’t have to worry about
any serious outbreaks of major forest fires in the areas surrounding
our community, which was a concern since the month of May was an
unusually dry month. We can hopefully look forward to an enjoyable
summer.
I’m sure there are many who are not aware that the national
and provincial park and recreation associations have been
designating the month of June to celebrate the return of summer.
During our Council meeting in June one of the longest Mayor’s
Proclamations was made to proclaim the month of June as Recreation
and Parks Month in NB. Recreation New Brunswick’s theme is -
Recreation & Parks: Live it Everyday! We encourage everyone to
follow this theme throughout the summer months.
The following
paragraph was taken from the flyer distributed by the Village’s
Public Works Department: “Want a greener lawn? It’s simple! Grass
clippings are actually beneficial to your lawn if handled properly.
By using a mulching mower, you will: have a healthier lawn, save on
fertilizer cost and save over 30% of the time involved in cutting
your lawn. Mulched grass clippings recycle the fertilizer you have
already applied to your lawn. In addition the clippings can supply
about 30% of the nitrogen your lawn needs to keep it green and
healthy. Grass leaf is nearly 90% water and it decomposes in just a
couple of weeks. Leaving the mulched clippings in your yard returns
the minerals and nutrients to the soil; nitrogen is released as the
leaf decomposes.” As a reminder, the Village will no longer be
picking up grass clippings. You are responsible to dispose of your
own grass clippings.
A number of motions were passed at our June
Council meeting:
PAC Appointments: Council reviewed and approved
the motions that were brought forward at the regular Council meeting
for the re-appointment of members to the Planning Advisory
Committee, as follows – Brad Marshall, Chairperson for another
one-year term; Councillor Gisèle McCaie-Burke as Vice Chairperson
for another one-year term; and Sam McEwan as a member of the
committee for a period of three years.
Contract Four: A motion
was brought forward and passed by Council to accept the tendered bid
submitted by Hogan Paving Ltd. in the amount of $137,091.60 for the
Street Improvement Program 2010 Contract Four – Oliver Crescent and
Birchwood Crescent.
Gas Tax Program - A motion was passed by
Council for the document entitled Municipality of the Village of
New Maryland Revised Five-Year Capital Investment Plan (2006 -
2010) prepared by the Capital Plan Committee to be adopted. Some of
the money from the Gas Tax Program will be used in the installation
of storm sewer services in Baker Brook Court.
Nancy St. Croix, our
Community Facilities Manager, has recently been notified of approval
of the application she submitted through the Built Heritage
Program. Funding has been approved for an amount up to $28,435.
Council has agreed to match this amount. The funding will support
the restoration of Victoria Hall in New Maryland. Thank you Nancy
and congratulations on the approval of your application to the Built
Heritage Program.
In closing here’s something to think about: “A
dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together
is a
reality.” - John Lennon
