Rockland
Miller was hired by Village Council to the position of Public Works
Supervisor in 2002. The
department is divided in two (2) divisions:
Transportation
Water & Wastewater.
The Public Works Department has four full time
employees, a Supervisor, a Water and Wastewater Technician, a
Transportation Technician and a Labourer. During the summer months,
students are hired to help with the maintenance of village property.
Transportation The Public Works Department is responsible for the repair
and maintenance of 28.5kms of streets, 6kms of sidewalks, numerous
culverts, road signs and village property.
The department also maintains the Village’s Water
Distribution System and the Village’s Wastewater Collection System.
The Water Distribution System has three pumping stations, three
reservoirs and five production wells. The Wastewater Collection
System consists of three Wastewater Treatment Facilities; our newest
facility was commissioned in 2004 and offers a Tertiary Level
Treatment.
The Village provides weekly solid waste
collection, weekly recyclable collection, one “spring clean-up”
collection, a spring tree mulching program and a fall leaf pick-up.
Water Utility The Village relies on groundwater for its supply of safe,
good quality water. The water is removed from the ground by five
production wells, one on the east side of the highway, the other
four on the west side. To enhance and protect the quality of the
water, the Village incorporates breakpoint chlorination; strict
operation, maintenance, repair, and construction procedures and
controls; a backflow prevention program; customer inquiries
investigation; and a thorough quality monitoring program. The
Village supplies water to approximately 638 homes or 40% of the
homes in the village. The remaining homes are served by private
wells.
Water Metering & Billing The Village has changed to a metered rate for its water
utility customers. Water meters are placed just inside the wall of
those homes in the Village. The meters are read using a remote
reader for safe and convenient service. The water meter remains the
property of the Village and should be accessible in case it needs
maintenance. Next to your meter is your main valve, which you may
need in a hurry should a leak develop in your own plumbing.
Exercising this valve from time to time will help ensure that it can
be easily operated should a problem present itself.
Private Well Owners Private well owners should have their water tested at least
once per year to ensure they are using safe water. Sample bottles
and collection procedures can be picked up at the village office
between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.
Sewer Utility Wastewater is collected from 99 percent of our residents;
the wastewater is treated to the satisfaction of the provincial
regulators at three sites. One site provides tertiary treatment, one
site is an aerated lagoon and the third is a lagoon. Residents can
help with the maintenance of the village’s collection by not
disposing the following items down a toilet or drain:
houseplant leaves and clippings
silt or mud; rags
human or animal hair
tea bags, coffee grounds, filters
cooking grease or animal grease (don't pour
these down the sink either)
cigarettes, cigars, butts; kitty litter
solvents, paint
sanitary napkins and tampons
disposable diapers
condoms
boxes, packaging, wrappers.
New products are advertised as being
bio-degradable, unfortunately these products are not in the
collection system long enough to break down, instead they cause
blockages in sanitary sewer service connections, mains and pumping
stations, causing backups into homes, and unnecessary discharges to
the environment. These items need to be placed in the garbage.
To report any problems after hours with
the water and sewage system or problems with a roadway, please call
457-0695.
