Again this year, the Village’s Recreation & Leisure Services Department has registered the Village of New Maryland to participate in the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge during the month of June.

We are challenging our residents to log 30 minutes of activity for each of the 30 days of June. Last year, as a first-time initiative, New Maryland tracked more than 700,000 minutes of physical activity during the challenge. We ranked 8th in NB out of 172 competing communities, and 116th overall out of more than 2,300 communities in Canada. This year we want to do even better!

On June 1st, (which also happens to be our anniversary of incorporation) the Village will launch the Community Better Challenge with a 30-minute Mayor’s Walk starting at 7:00 pm along the New Maryland Highway, followed by refreshments at the Fire Hall. All are welcome to join us! Help us kick off the Community Better Challenge with a bang!

Participating is so easy – download the “ParticipACTION” app, create a user name and enter your postal code and join the challenge – that’s it! You can log any activity – walking, running, biking, yard work, it all counts! You can join as an individual or as a team (up to 8 people). Any and all activity that is logged with a postal code within the Village of New Maryland will count toward our cumulative total (if you don’t live directly in the Village, you can use OUR postal code at the Village office E3C 1K1 to be included in the challenge!)

If you prefer to log your activity on their website, you can visit http://www.participaction.com/ to join the challenge as well.

If you are looking for some extra motivation, we encourage you to take a walk, stroll or roll along the New Maryland Highway sidewalks.  Here you will find 30 “activity” stations for all ages and abilities. Bring your family, your bubble or your furry legged friend and help New Maryland celebrate the whole month of June!

But wait there’s more! Just by logging on and participating you will be entered into regular prize draws to win some ParticipACTION gift cards to spend at their online store – they have lots of great products to choose from. And even better, as a community, we will be “competing” with other communities all across Canada. The Community Better Challenge is awarding $100,000 to the community with the most participants and accumulates the most active minutes during the challenge. Wow!
