May 2014 – Cenotaph
In 2007 major upgrades were carried out at our cenotaph. The monument was registered with the National Inventory of Canadian Military Memorials. The lettering on the monument was repainted. A swale was constructed at the back of the property. A circular walkway was designed and a seating pad was erected using pavers. Three flag poles were positioned near the parking area.
At that time a request was made to the Department of National Defence in Ottawa for a 105mm C1 Howitzer for permanent display at our cenotaph. Our request was denied due to the shortage of this piece of equipment. However, a tank was offered to us, which we had to decline due to limited space.
In August 2013 we submitted another letter to see if a 105mm C1 Howitzer might be available. We were put on a waiting list. We were very excited when we received confirmation in January 2014 that our request was granted. The Village is responsible to construct the concrete pad, which will be 15 feet by 15 feet, to accommodate this military piece of equipment.
Proceeds from our 12th Annual Open Golf Tournament, hosted by the New Maryland Community Support Group, will go toward the installation of the 105mm C1 Howitzer. The golf tournament will be held Saturday, June 14 at Gage Golf and Curling Club in Oromocto. We will return to the New Maryland Centre for a steak barbeque and prizes. Deadline to register is June 6. For more information you can contact me at 459-3535, email email@example.com.
