Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal Presentation: This honour is administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall and was created in 1985 by the Canadian monarch-in-Council. It is an acknowledgement that the recipient has completed 20 years as a member of a fire service, of which at least 10 years have been served in the performance of duties involving potential risk and a record of exemplary service during this period.

A very moving ceremony was held on Sunday, January 23rd at Victoria Hall when the Queen Elizabeth 11 Platinum Jubilee Medals were presented to local recipients. The Medals are awarded to those that have given a lifetime of service to their Community, Province, and Country. The Platinum Jubilee Medal signifies the Queen’s 70th Anniversary of her accession to the Throne.

The Village of New Maryland Remembrance Day service returns to its regular format at the cenotaph this year. The parade will leave from Faith Baptist Church at 10:40 am and the Village is hosting a lunch reception at the New Maryland Centre after the service. If you would like to lay a wreath, please contact Michelle at the Village Office no later than Tuesday, November 8^th to be included in the program.

Over the past month, Mayor Judy Wilson-Shee was pleased to present prizes and signage to our six winning gardeners in the Communities in Bloom/Miracle Gro “Best Garden” Contest.

Our Judges Choice favourite garden was the amazing back yard of Ariel Garneau and Dan Hoyt, complete with raised garden beds, chickens, and greenhouses.

The Village’s Recreation & Leisure Services Department congratulates all our participating entries and nominations. Urban Rural Rides 

As Chairperson of the Seniors Advisory Committee, I am very pleased to announce a new transportation service for seniors in New Maryland.

Urban Rural Rides is an affordable volunteer-based program whose mission is to provide affordable transportation to Greater Fredericton Area seniors.   The program has been operating in Westmorland and Albert counties for about 8 years and has proven to be a safe way for seniors to get to their medical appointments, get their groceries and run other essential errands.  The service goes beyond transportation; it is also about community connections, reducing isolation and helping seniors age in place.

We are actively seeking volunteer drivers to help get this service up and running in New Maryland.   More information on how to become a volunteer driver or to register to use the service as a client is available on the Urban Rural Rides website page at https://urbanruralrides.ca/fredericton-area/

Approved volunteer drivers are matched up with clients needing a drive by the Fredericton area ride coordinator.   Her name is Emely Lemair and she can be reached at 506-999-2102 or by email at gfaurbanruralrides@gmail.com

To keep both drivers and clients safe Covid protocols are in place.  Drivers and clients are required to wear masks,  the passenger rides in the back seat to maximize distancing and vehicles are sanitized between rides.

The Village of New Maryland Council has announced that it has cancelled planned Canada Day activities. In light of the recent discoveries of children’s bodies in unmarked graves at (former) residential schools, the recent terrorist attack in London, Ontario and the general climate of uncertainty and hesitancy, we recognize that this is a challenging moment in history. Although there are many reasons to celebrate being Canadian, we encourage our residents to pause on Canada Day, reflect on what it means to be Canadian, and enjoy time with family, friends, and reach out to neighbours with an open heart and mind. – LMS

Presentation to Ben Soke

Mayor Wilson-Shee, on behalf of Council and Staff, presented local teen Ben Soke with a Certificate of Achievement during the Council meeting on Wednesday evening.  Ben has recently been recognized for his outstanding talent and skills as a right-handed pitcher/middle infielder with the Fredericton Minor Baseball Association and will be heading to the new Muskoka Outlaws Baseball Academy in Ontario this August.  Muskoka Outlaws Baseball Academy is an elite high school baseball academy that offers a high-performance program to students who display exceptional talent and dedication to hard work.  It offers an environment for dedicated student athletes that are striving to compete at the next level, where they will practice and train five days a week and travel for tournaments, while being held to high academic standards. Ben is a young athlete that has already cultivated a strong reputation for his skills and talents, and also for his commitment to being the best player he can be.  We want to share our congratulations with Ben on his outstanding achievement and wish him every success at the Academy and with his baseball career.

Presentation to Coach Brent Baker

On behalf of my colleagues on Council and Staff, I am extremely honored this evening to present Coach Brent Baker with a Certificate of Recognition.

Coach Baker is one of the region’s top university basketball coaches of the past two decades and we would like to take this opportunity to recognize a few of his many achievements as he steps down from coaching. He has spent the past 13 years as Head Coach of the UNB REDS men’s basketball team and due to his leadership and coaching skills, he and the team have achieved a number of significant successes.

Coach Baker led the REDS to the Atlantic University Sports (AUS) playoffs during 8 of his 12 seasons. The team’s win of the 2017-2018 AUS title was the first for UNB since 1967. They also won the 2017-2018 Atlantic conference regular season pennant. The team had top-four finishes in the past six years, including a first-round playoff bye in four of those six seasons.

Coach Baker was named AUS Coach of the Year in 2015 and again in 2018 and became the first recipient of the Dean’s Award as UNB Coach of the Year. He has also been recognized by UNB for his outstanding recruitment abilities and leadership in developing incoming student-athletes.

Brent started his journey with basketball as an excellent shooter and tough defender at Middleton Regional High School and went on to a St. Francis Xavier University.

He was the 1980 Basketball Nova Scotia adult male player of the year and a member of the 1981 Nova Scotia Canada Games Team, played 5 seasons at St. F.X. and was a conference first-team all-star in 1984-85. In 1987 he was a member of Canada’s national team at the World Student Games in Yugoslavia.

Coach Baker’s long coaching career started with 18 years of coaching at the high school level at Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro and also included 2 years of coaching the St. F.X. X-Women’s basketball team.

Those experiences led Coach Baker to UNB, where his long-time dedication to the university and the sport of basketball was exemplary. That journey also led Brent to our community. Coach Baker is a resident of New Maryland and we are incredibly proud to honor him tonight and recognize his outstanding achievements. We wish him nothing but healing and strength going forward.

Presentation of UMNB Service Awards to Councillors McCaie-Burke and LeBlanc

 The Union of Municipalities of NB (UMNB) is a bilingual association of 60 local governments of all sizes, representing over one-third of NB’s population. The organization was established in 1994 to advocate on behalf of municipalities and New Maryland has been a long-standing member.

UMNB hosts an annual conference which is usually held in Fredericton, and long- service awards are handed out at the banquet each year. The conference this year, like so many, was held virtually and two members of our Council were recognized for long-service awards. The awards were presented at Formal Council which took place Wednesday, December 16, 2020.

The scrolls are presented on behalf of the Province of NB and UMNB jointly. The scrolls state that they “recognize a significant contribution to the institution of local government in the Province of New Brunswick” by the recipient.

Councillor Gisèle McCaie-Burke was recognized for 12 years of service. Gisèle has been an enthusiastic and active member of Council and a great ambassador for our community. Her focus in recent years has been on issues facing senior citizens and she was instrumental in the establishment of our Age-Friendly Committee. She has consistently worked hard to promote a healthy and active community and we have been fortunate to have her on Council for the past 12 years. Congratulations Gisele!

Councillor Paul LeBlanc was recognized by UMNB for 29 years of service. Paul joined Council when  the municipality was originally established in 1991 and has continued to serve for almost 30 years. He has been a dedicated member of Council and participated in some challenging debates and decisions over the years. He has persevered in his commitment of doing what is best for  the community, whether providing quality services, innovative programs and facilities, or improvements to infrastructure. While many organizations are struggling with the concept of cancelling their Remembrance Day Service I am pleased to report that the Village of New Maryland will be hosting a modified Remembrance Day Service. Our service will be held inside the New Maryland Centre. Although there will be limited attendance by invitation and we will follow safety protocols, the service will be live-streamed on our Facebook page. The wreaths will be pre-positioned by our Recreation Foreman, Kirk Billings while the names will be read out loud during the service. Unfortunately, this year we will not be permitted to host a reception.

I extend a special invitation to all of our residents to watch the service on our Facebook page.

COVID-19 Pandemic

Staff and Council are taking this pandemic very seriously. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our staff, Council and residents.  We are a very caring community. As your Mayor I am asking everyone for your support and cooperation. We are encouraging our residents who do not have to go out to please remain at home. We can all practice in social distancing and washing hands properly. Avoid public spaces and only purchase items that you need. Show community spirit by checking on your neighbors.

An important message to anyone that needs assistance, in particular our seniors. I am available to run errands for you, such as getting prescriptions filled or groceries. Please note: I have no health issues, did not leave the Village during March break, and will follow all safety precautions at all times. I can be reached at 459-3535. We must all work together and stay focused during these challenging times.

You have probably heard many times during the last few days about flattening the curve. What does this mean?  The peak is high and we want to reduce or flatten the curve. The higher the curve, the more medical attention is required. Without measures the peak will remain high. With measures the peak can be flattened. Reduce peak burden on hospitals and infrastructure to flatten the curve. I can not say it enough – stay home if you do not have to go out. If you have to go out, practice social distancing and proper handwashing.

New Maryland’s New Rescue Unit

On January 11, 2020 the New Maryland Fire Department received their new heavy rescue unit, which replaced the light rescue unit that the department has outgrown. The new unit is called a ‘walk around and walk in’ rescue. It is designed to transport fire personnel to the scene and has more storage space to carry more equipment that is needed in today’s fire service.  Another feature for this unit is that it has capabilities to be used for a command post when the Village encounters major emergency or disaster events. This unit is a 2020 Freightliner and is red in colour with the name New Maryland Fire Department engraved on the side in large letters.  Anyone interested in having a tour of the new unit can stop by the fire hall during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (excluding holidays).

There has been an unfounded rumour circulating in the region regarding recycling at Fredericton Region Solid Waste. The rumour has suggested that recycling items packaged in blue bags are not actually recycled and simply diverted to the landfill.  These rumours are not true and the blue bag items placed at the curb on recycling days are treated in the same manner as items placed in a recycling bin.  You may have already encountered this rumour, or may hear of it in the upcoming weeks and months, but I would greatly appreciate it if everyone sets the record straight regarding blue bag items when the opportunity exists.  Our residents region-wide need to know that their work in sorting recyclables and placing them curbside for collection does make a difference, and their efforts are rewarded by these materials being recycled.

Transportation Survey Results Update

The Transportation sub-committee, of the Seniors Advisory Committee (SAC), met June 26, 2019 to discuss the results of the Transportation Survey that was issued to residents in April and closed in May of this year. These results were shared with the SAC at their September 23rd meeting as the committee did not meet during July and August.

Of the 519 survey responses received, 96.34% of respondents indicated that they travel to and from Fredericton using their own vehicle. Respondents also indicated that convenience of schedule (90.89%), cost of service (71.96%) and pick-up or drop-off locations (64.08%) were the most important factors that would influence their decision to use public transportation. 15.46% of respondents stated they would consider being a driver if there was a ride-share program. The sub-committee concluded from the  survey results that where a very high percentage of residents use their own vehicles for travel, along with other important factors, it is questionable whether a public transit system would be advisable at this time.

The sub-committee recommended some actions that could be taken to assist with transportation needs and those included: 1) discounted taxi rates – negotiate better rates for residents i.e.: seniors’ rates, students’ rates, accessibility rates and special rates for certain zones; 2) complete a walking/bike path connecting the Village to Fredericton, which is already being investigated by the Mayor with UNB, NB Trails and the City of Fredericton; and 3) repeat the survey efforts on regular intervals (every 2 years) to determine changing factors that might impact transportation decisions. Future survey results can be compared to the results from the first survey, which acts as a benchmark.

At this time the survey results indicate that the potential use of public transportation in the Village would not justify the significant costs involved. However, the SAC continues to consider other transportation options that may be feasible for the Village, such as ride-share and dial-a-ride programs, and plans to perform another survey in 2021 to see how transportation needs in the Village have changed.

The “Frank Dunn” Annual New Maryland Open Golf Tournament will be held this year on Saturday Sept. 7 at Gage Golf and Curling Club in Oromocto. Registration deadline is August 30th and completed forms can be dropped off at the Village office. At the May 15, 2019 Council meeting, Mayor Wilson-Shee presented certificates of appreciation to the members of Team NB who competed in the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta in February 2019, and who are New Maryland residents. Team members who received certificates were Alex Peasley (Curling), Mohamad Hariri (Boxing), and John Bourgeois (Boxing Head Coach). Other team members, Julia Arnason and Emily Johnston, who competed in Artistic Swimming, were not able to attend the meeting. Mayor Wilson-Shee noted that she will make arrangements to present Julia and Emily with their certificates at a later time. On behalf of Council and staff, Mayor Wilson-Shee extended congratulations to the members of Team NB who participated in the Canada Games, and represented the community and province so well. She wished them much success in their future competitions.

Monday, February 25, 2019, the Guides of New Maryland held their fun fair which celebrated World Thinking Day. It was a day to reflect on their global sisterhood in Guiding and to think about issues that are important to girls and women around the world.

2019 World Thinking Day theme was Leadership. It is dedicated to the group of girls who took the lead in 1909 and demanded Lord Baden-Powell create ‘something for the girls’.  It was an honour to be invited to the Awards Ceremony and presented the following two awards:

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

ALEX RAYWORTH

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an internationally recognized program for young people, building their skills to equip them for life and work. By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development.

It allows our youth to determine what they are passionate about, regardless of their background, culture or access to resources.

The Award encourages young people to spend time volunteering in their community, which both benefits others and contributes to their own growth and well-being.

It was an honour to present Alex Rayworth with the Duke of Edinburgh – Bronze Level Award. Congratulations!

Canada Cord

NICOLE KIRBY

The Canada Cord is the highest award that a Pathfinder can earn. The requirements include completing the three year Pathfinder Program as well as extra initiatives in the areas of Community Service, Volunteering, and specific hours spent in developing Leadership or Camping Skills.

Having completed the requirements for this Canada Cord Award, we know that Nicole’s Guiding experiences will take her into a lifetime of good deeds and prepare her for a life of service to others, bringing light into the lives of those less fortunate than herself, always being prepared for anything and challenging herself to dream big and make a positive impact.

This award in our area is presented in the fall but due to conflicting schedules it was rescheduled to February 25.

It was a pleasure to present the Canada Cord Award to Nicole Kirby. Congratulations!

Official Unveiling of the Village’s Stone Sculpture

The stone sculpture that is permanently situated at Victoria Hall Park was created by artist Songul Telek, from Tocat Turkey, and the name of her work is “ENTROPY”. The inevitable expansion and distortion of the universe is called entropy. It is often defined as randomness and disorder in a system. Songul has told us that in her sculpture she wanted to “figure out a harmony throughout contradictions. Thus, a meaning which holds the very essence of being, the existence of human, earth, universe and life”.

The sculpture weighs approximately 6 tonnes and is a solid piece of granite, which comes from the Hampstead Quarry (Spoon Island North Quarry).

Sculpture for New Maryland

Songul Telek is the artist at this year’s Sculpture Saint John Symposium who will be creating a sculpture for New Maryland.  Songul Telek is from Tocat, Turkey and graduated from the Sculpture Department at Mimar Sinan University.  She has participated in over 20 symposiums and multiple exhibits throughout Turkey, USA, Egypt, India, Romania, Syria and the Czech Republic. During the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium in 2011, Songul created a sculpture for Bar Harbour Maine and we are fortunate that she is participating in this year’s New Brunswick International Sculpture Symposium in Saint John and creating a one-of-a-kind sculpture for New Maryland.

The goal of the symposium is to connect communities with affordable public art, educate people and young artists about public art, and to link the New Brunswick sculpture trail with the sculpture trail in Maine, creating an international sculpture trail that will consist of a total of 72 pieces of art by the year 2020.

The piece of art that Songul is creating for our community is valued at $100,000 however the Village is only required to cover $16,000 of the cost. Additional expenses include transportation of the sculpture from the symposium site to New Maryland, construction of a concrete base, installation and landscaping.

We are fortunate that Opus International has agreed to sponsor the sculpture in the amount of $7500.  The New Maryland Community Support Group has agreed to use the proceeds from this year’s golf tournament toward offsetting costs associated with acquiring the sculpture.  Also, the revenue from the sale of the 2018 calendars will be used towards this project.

The sculpture, once completed, will be installed at Victoria Hall Park and will become part of the Sculpture Trail that winds through New Brunswick. We will be hosting an official unveiling of the sculpture on Saturday October 13th at 3:00 pm in Victoria Hall Park.

Acadian flag raising event at Victoria Hall, August 15, 2018 at 11 am

National Acadian Day was established to celebrate Acadian culture and was first recognized in 1881 when the National Convention of the Acadians set the date Aug. 15 as National Acadian Day.

In support of the Acadian community and in recognition of French Acadians living in the Village of New Maryland, we raise the Acadian flag today to celebrate the culture and heritage of the Acadian people.

In honour and respect of those who lost their lives in the August 10, 2018 shooting tragedy in Fredericton, we lowered the Acadian flag to half mast until sunset on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Expression of Gratitude to former PAC member Stephen Conn – July 18, 2018 Formal Council meeting

On behalf of Council, staff and the Planning Advisory Committee, I was pleased to welcome former Planning Advisory Committee member Stephen Conn to the meeting so that we could express our sincere gratitude for Stephen’s past contributions to PAC for over 20 years.

As a resident of Sunrise Estates subdivision, Stephen is a UNB graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry, majoring in Resource Management.

Stephen dedicated his entire career, until his recent retirement, as an employee of the NB Department of Natural Resources as a resource and facilities management planner and as a long-time member of the Association of Registered Professional Foresters of New Brunswick.

Stephen’s tenure on PAC spanned between September 1997 and June 2018.  The committee benefitted greatly from Stephen’s wealth of knowledge and experience during his more than 20 years of membership.  The importance Stephen places on engagement in the community is also evidenced through 15 years as a former leader in the local Scouting movement.

On behalf of Council, staff and his former colleagues on PAC, I would like to thank Stephen for his years of dedicated service. I also wish to acknowledge his contributions to the betterment of the Village through his valued input on land use, development and planning matters during his tenure on the committee.  The Village is very fortunate to have residents like Stephen who demonstrate such a high level of engagement in their community. Stephen was presented with a small token of sincere appreciation.
