You may notice Village Public Works staff planting trees today at various locations along Lynda Lane, Crown Avenue, Kimberley Street and Alban Street.

Village staff consulted with a local tree nursery to ensure the trees were suited for planting along Village streets and beneath power lines.  A total of 26 trees will be planted within the limits of the municipal street right-of-way and the species selected includes Red Sunset Maple, Harvest Gold Flowering Crab, Sunburst Honey Locust, Serviceberry, Glenleven Linden and Maidenhare Ginkgo.  The trees have been tagged with educational tree ID cards containing information about each species.

A well-managed street tree population can bring large dividends for a municipality.  These benefits include:

-Improved air quality                              -Reductions in household energy consumption

-Traffic calming                                        -Storm water attenuation

-Reduced noise pollution                        -Greater wildlife habitat

-Increased property values                     -Enhanced neighborhood aesthetics

This project is also identified in the Village’s Municipal Plan, which states that “it shall be a policy of Council to encourage the preservation and enhancement of the natural and built environment by protecting and cultivating trees and vegetation in parks and green spaces, and to institute a tree planting program”.   ALH
